Farewell Seaside Cottages, Hello Abalone Pool Villas

With winter on the doorstep of the West Coast, Paternoster is about to embrace another season of indoor indulgence.  Winter is also the season when the lifecycle ends of many flora that adorn our coast line – only to be reborn when Spring arrives.  South of Africa’s two Seaside Cottages will soon withdraw from the public eye only to be reincarnated into the opulant 5-star Abalone Pool Villas; scheduled for opening in late July 2017 just in time for the flower season!

The land the units were built on was purchased in 2004.  Building commenced in early 2007 and the two holiday units were opened to the public later that year to great applause.  The Seaside Cottages had been particularly popular with holiday makers who relished the spectacular sea views and infinity pools which had become its iconic trademark.  Apart from the 180 degree views of the Atlantic, guests also benefitted from its proximity to the beach and town center.  Travellers who venture to this cosy fishing village longed for more sophistication, and the units’ association with its nearby 5-star sibling, the Abalone House & Spa, brought forth the next step in its evolution.

The enticing new offering, inspired by the Abalone House brand’s success story, will see the closure of the Seaside Cottages on 31 May 2017.  When it reopens in Spring, departing is proverbial cocoon, the transformation into the Abalone Pool Villas will surprise and delight all future guests.  Guests will enjoy the Pool Villas’ association with Abalone House even more! The hotel, which opened a Reuben’s restaurant and Healing Earth Spa in 2013, has become a sought after destination in the Western Cape; setting the benchmark of what getaways on the West Coast must be.  The Abalone Pool Villas are set to take this decadence to the next step.

The two newly refurbished and well-appointed Abalone Pool Villas will be a unique interpretation of what Abalone House is famed for.  This includes the Tretchikoff prints which will, like Abalone House, also adorn the walls of the Abalone Pool Villas, adding to their mystique.  The additional charm of the units’ location on the hill offers a dreamy element of surprise:  the large glass doors which open up onto vistas of a deep blue, and often turquoise, ocean.

The Abalone Pool Villas are most importantly family-friendly.  This makes these units the perfect escape-to destination any time of the year for families with teenagers or groups of friends.  The Abalone Pool Villas will also include a unique breakfast delivered to the units daily from the Reuben’s Restaurant, enhancing the familiarity with Abalone-brand and making it the most desired West Coast experience.

Guests who wish to be pampered in the splendour of the Abalone Pool Villas need not wait long as bookings will open in late June / early July 2017 on the Abalone House website www.abalonehouse.co.za.  In the interim, a celebration sale to mark the end of the Seaside Cottages is now on.  Book your favourite Seaside Cottage online today at www.seasidecottage.co.za for the month of May at only R999 per unit per night.

ABOUT THE YOGA TEACHERS

Justine Barnes
“Yoga gives me the space and clarity I need during challenging times. I try and move through these times as elegantly as possible, and yoga helps me do this!” Justine found yoga in the nineties and having been a dancer for 10 years she was already aware of the beauty of the mind, body connection, but had a yearning to take it to a deeper level. In the beginning she practiced yoga on and off for many years and every time she went back to it, it felt like home.  Now, every day, Justine looks forward to her time on the mat. She did her teachers training with Jacqueline Ivory at Jai Yoga and is a qualified Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga teacher. Justine also has experience in teaching yoga nidra, pregnancy yoga and kid’s yoga. For her yoga is a never-ending journey, there is always more to learn, and she keeps inspired by attending workshops from yogis around the world. Her workshops have been with Sharon Gannon and David Life (Jivamukti), Michael Gannon, Patrick Creelman, Ana Forrest and many more. “The only way to inspire others to practice yoga, is to feel it yourself, and the only way that you can feel it, is to practice it. Yoga is 99% practice, 1% theory!”

Rosalind Langer
Ros came to yoga whilst living on the island of Antigua. Yoga teachers were few and far between, and those that did come to the island, never stayed very long. She began practicing using a dvd: The Primary Series: John Scott. Since then Ros has practiced daily, reading about yoga with an intense hunger, and following her passion. Having been a high school English teacher for 20 years, the ‘teaching’ aspect came quite naturally to her.  In 2012 she did a 7 day workshop with John Scott at Purple Valley in India, and later completed his Teacher Training in Cornwall in January 2013.  “Yoga is my life. My mat is my home. Yoga has become entwined in the very nerve centre of my being. It is my guard: it protects me, fulfils me and is my constant companion. I feel blessed to be able to share this love with others. My Yoga journey never ends. Each student has been a gift that has deepened my love and appreciation of Ashtanga Yoga. I have seen in my self and many others the transformative power of breath, movement and awareness”.

Karen Venter
“Yoga has given me the skills to learn to de-stress and find more freedom in my body, my mind and my life” I found yoga in 2007 where it immediately had a profound effect on my life and I knew then that I had started on a lifelong journey of transformation. I developed a new found respect for my body, my mind and my health. Having been working in the corporate world for a few years, yoga couldn’t have come at a better time! Naturally the call to teach began knocking on my door and I finally took the plunge. I completed my teachers training with Jacqueline Ivory in 2011. In 2013 I travelled to Miami to study under Kino Macgregor and Tim Feldmann and will once again be travelling to study under their guidance in 2015. Being able to share what I have learnt brings me great joy.

Introducing Facebook videos

South of Africa’s social media platform on Facebook and Twitter have recently been treated to the publication of various video snippets from our properties.  If a picture speaks a thousand words, then a video would be a million.

Our followers on Twitter and likes on Facebook have been spoiled with videos of the fantastic wildlife at Birdsong Cottages, the jolly staff at Shangri-La (who is giving their own renditions of “We wish you a Merry Xmas”) and the resident birdlife at the Cabanas of Elephant Springs.

We have several more videos on the way.  Go and like our pages today and share these short clips with your friends and family.  We also invite all our guests to submit their video clips taken at our portfolio to socialmedia@southofafrica.com.

Taking care of our animals at Birdsong Cottages

zebrasBecause of the superb bushveld location of Birdsong Cottages, a variety of wildlife is found on the premises.  The well being of our animals is a very high priority for South of Africa, and we have taken advantage of the generous assistance of farmers and nature lovers in our immediate surroundings.

Birdsong Cottages is a 32 hectare property, and with the good will of our neighbours, we have dropped the fences on both sides of the property, allowing the game to roam free in what is now a 100 hectare area!  We have 2 specified feeding points on site where these animals may be found during the late afternoon.

When you next visit Birdsong Cottages, ask our friendly staff to show these feeding points to you.  Pack a picnic basket and enjoy the beauty of nature in the heart of the Waterberg.

Brand new Boma at Birdsong Cottages

blogbomaBirdsong Cottages is proud to present its brand new Boma.  This fantastic new venue in the heart of the bush has been declared open by the owners of South of Africa this past weekend and christened the “Edwin Cameron Boma” in honour of Justice Edwin Cameron, the Constitutional Court justice and life long friend of owner Johan Jansen van Vuuren.

What makes this Boma unique is the fact that it is located amidst the natural bushveld with its free roaming antelope and small game.  The Boma is within walking distance or driving distance from all the units, and guests may book the Boma for their private functions or braai-evenings.

The venue is ideal for Conference breakaways as well as Wedding receptions.  Nearby parking is convenient for all guests who will enjoy the short walk to the Boma.  A lovely feature at the Boma is the table with vintage waterbowl and jug that guests use to wash their hands in the way it was done “in die ou tyd”!
