Abalone House offers restorative hideaway this winter

winterSouth Africa, Paternoster; The Cape West Coast with its bracing ocean, windswept beaches, endless views and dramatic sunsets is the perfect destination, summer or winter. In the colder months there are few things more alluring than huddling up next to a fire and feasting on sumptuous food. Abalone House, a five-star boutique hotel in the picture-perfect fisherman’s village of Paternoster, one and a half hours’ drive from Cape Town, is the ideal place to recharge this winter.

Boasting a fantastic winter spa special in conjunction with the Healing Earth Spa on the premises, visitors will be pampered from start to finish: accommodation, meals and a two-and-a-half hour spa treatment, employing the healing properties of massage and aromatherapy, are included.

Upon entering the Healing Earth spa, visitors are immediately transported to a serene space… whitewashed floors and wooden loungers echo the seaside setting, while Nguni hides and boldly patterned scatter cushions add an eclectic African touch. Treatment rooms are calm, quiet and wonderfully cosy.

Guests can choose from a coffee, cinnamon and orange body energiser treatment that will leave them feeling rejuvenated, or an African ginger slimming body treatment to get rid of toxins. Healing Earth products boast natural, locally sourced ingredients of the highest quality and offer a holistic approach to spa experiences.

Both treatments start off with a herbal tea to calm and focus the mind, in preparation for the therapeutic actions to follow. Heading off to the treatment room, guests will first experience dry body brushing. This invigorating technique increases lymphatic circulation and stimulates the skin to improve absorption of aromatherapy actives in the body polish. Then a full body scrub will improve circulation and remove dead skin cells, as well as increasing penetration of active ingredients.

This is followed by a soothing bath with energizing salt crystals that contain minerals to replenish the immune system. Next, surrender to a body wrap to drain excess fluid from the body. The coffee, cinnamon and orange body wrap uses the toning and draining elements from cinnamon, orange and coffee extracts, to assist in toning and brightening the skin and improving circulation. The African ginger body wrap tones specific areas and improves skin texture. After a shower, a heavenly full body massage follows with coffee, cinnamon and orange essential oils or an African ginger aromatherapy blend. These oils penetrate the blood stream and lymphatic systems by using a combination of Swedish massage and pressure points to leave you feeling lighter and relaxed. The treatment is finished with an application of corrective cream to targeted areas.

After such a blissful treat, the options are vast: relax in your luxurious suite, enjoy a gentle stroll on the beach, or simply relax by the fire or on the roof deck on a clear day.

Accommodation in one of the luxurious guest suites at Abalone House is included and ticks all the boxes: modern amenities, top quality linens, eclectic décor and sumptuous gourmet meals at Reuben’s – it simply is the perfect pamper package.

The package includes two night’s accommodation at the 5-star Abalone House hotel, one 2.5 hour spa treatment (as described above) per person at the Healing Earth spa, breakfast on both mornings and a 2-course dinner at the highly-acclaimed Reuben’s on both evenings. Cost is R1 945 per person sharing per night and is valid from 1 May to 31 August 2015.

In addition, for those who have limited time but still want a pampering treat, try the Lunchtime Indulgence. This includes a two-course meal at Reuben’s plus a 30 minute Healing Earth spa treatment (choose between a manicure, pedicure or facial) at R395 per person. What’s more, if you book a table for 6 guests, you pay for only 5. This is ideal for a group of girlfriends or even if you’re celebrating a special occasion with friends and family.

The renowned Waberberg Country Hotel, Shangri-La, has crossed the threshold into the international hospitality arena. In response to the high demand from its loyal patronage of the past 24 years, the romantic Country Hotel in the heart of the bushveld has opened its very own Spa!  The long awaited move now elevates Shangri-La to new heights of decadence and service in an atmosphere of pure relaxation and sensual enjoyment.

Located at Shangri-La’s iconic sparkling pool, the new Spa forms part of the relaxation area.  “We have created a whole new space for our guests to enjoy the comforts of our well known destination,” says owner Johan Jansen van Vuuren, who has recently also opened a similar concept at the 5-star Abalone House & Spa in Paternoster.  “We have long been wanting to offer this service to our guests, and have the past 2 years been able to provide a mobile spa service with a local entrepreneur, however, the feedback has been extremely positive and the demand for a permanent offering high.  It was logical to take the next step.”

Elegant simplicity is what guests can expect from the upcoming Spa, which opened its doors on 1 July 2014 at Shangri-La.  The Spa offers two calm treatment rooms – one customized for couples. The services that guests can expect will range from a variety of massages and skin and body care treatments.  An enticing menu of face and body treatments is available to guests, and the beautifully soothing surroundings will ensure a deeply enjoyable experience.

The Country Hotel recently won its second consecutive Trip Advisor Award of Excellence 2014, which follows its first Trip Advisor Traveler’s Choice Award 2014 for top 25 Bargain Hotels in South Africa.  Shangri-La Country Hotel also boasts a Diner’s Club award winning wine list and has been hosting its popular monthly Food & Wine Pairing dinners to rave reviews this past year (read more about the next even further down).

The Shangri-La team

“We’ve done it again!” exclaims General Managers Ken Strydom from Shangri-La Country Hotel in Modimolle, and Leigh Longden from Abalone House & Spa in Paternoster.  The two hotels have both been awarded with yet another Trip Advisor Award of Excellence for 2014.

The award (being the 2nd for Shangri-La and the 3rd for Abalone House) honours hotels that have received a constant stream of positive scores with a rating of 4 out of 5 and higher.  “We’re thrilled,” says Managing Director Johan Jansen van Vuuren.  “When Abalone House received its first award in 2011, I was delighted.  Then it happened again, and Shangri-La joined in the celebration.  To receive it yet again is a true honour and a reflection of the hard work and effort we have put in to our guest satisfaction and customer service.  It’s remarkable and we are so grateful that our guests made this happen!”

According to Guest Relations Manager, Mr Egmond du Plessis, the amount of guest reviews have increased tremendously during the past year.  “The most popular platform for our group is Trip Advisor, and South of Africa takes pride in responding to each of our guests reviews as within 24 – 48 hours.  We value our guests feedback and use this as a tool to ensure that our customer service is of the highest standard,” says Du Plessis.

Apart from Shangri-La and Abalone House, newcomers to Trip Advisor include Birdsong Cottages and Modimolle Funky Stay, who both also average a 4 out of 5 rating so far.  “We’re putting in a lot of effort to also achieve these awards,” says General Manager Joseph Mabote of the properties.

A wonderful winter awaits on the West Coast

Abalone House in WinterSouth Africa, Paternoster, April 2014; The seaside is always a perfect getaway, whatever the weather, and this winter sees Abalone House and Spa in the charming coastal village of Paternoster on the Cape West Coast, providing the most indulgent winter comforts for its guests.

There are few things more invigorating than a brisk walk on the beach on a cold winter’s day. And even better is returning to the cosiest of spaces. And that is what makes Abalone House and Spa’s winter indulgent package a must.  The intimate space of the 10-suite guesthouse is all about cosy comfort. Rooms are decorated in earthy tones with ethnic elements and splashes of bright colour with the signature Tretchikoff prints dotted about. With vast king-sized beds, under-floor heating and luxurious mohair blankets, it’ll be difficult to tear yourself away from your room, especially with its iPod docking station, flat-screen TV, CD and DVD player and cappuccino machine. The library is well stocked with books and DVDs so there are plenty of excuses to enjoy cocooning in your room.

Once you do tear yourself away from the creature comforts of your room, head to the spa for some much-needed relaxation therapy. The locally produced Healing Earth products’ Earth Soul range uses quality indigenous ingredients. Think marula, Kalahari melon and mongongo nut used in oils, balms and scrubs. Spa experiences are tailor-made to invigorate, relax or de-stress. The spa space has a whitewashed beach house feel with fresh flowers and candles adding a luxurious touch.

On to the evening and Abalone House and Spa’s African Lounge is the best spot to enjoy a pre-dinner drink next to the roaring oversized fireplace. The in-house Reuben’s restaurant is perfect for delicious meals, from breakfast to lunches and dinners. High-back armchairs in deep reds, wooden ceiling beams, chandeliers and Persian carpets set the scene for an intimate and delicious dinner. If it’s a sunny afternoon, the place to be is on the brand new deck: bask in the winter sun while drinking in the fresh sea air and glorious sea views.

Making the most of the West Coast setting as well as Reuben Riffel’s love of aromatic spicing, starters are a choice of hearty bouillabaisse or Malay fish cakes. Signature pork belly with pomme purée or tandoori baked linefish with coconut rice will have diners torn for choice while sublime desserts of traditional malva pudding or cinnamon ice cream with Amarula anglaise and apricots are a perfect sweet ending.

But the pampering doesn’t end here, as the Bath Butler Service will finish off a perfect day. Head back to your suite for a heavenly Healing Earth bath ritual prepared for you with salts, bath milk or oils with heavenly aromatherapy properties. Snuggle up in a cosy bath robe, grab a fluffy towel from the heated towel rail and sink back into blissful relaxation before a good night’s rest.

Indeed, there are few places that will be as special this winter as Abalone House and Spa. The winter indulgence package costs R1395 per person sharing per night (minimum of a 2 night stay) and includes the following: accommodation, breakfast, a two-course dinner at Reuben’s, a one-hour spa treatment as well as a bath butler service each day. Valid from 1 May to 31 August 2014.

The “SOA” Road Trip – Part 1, Abalone House

During the next couple of weeks South of Africa will be publishing reviews by Capetonian travel journalist Erik Brits, who recently went on South of Africa’s first “Road Trip” to experience everything we have to offer.  Erik journeyed from the elite 5-star Abalone House in Paternoster, Western Cape, all the way to the unique Birdsong Cottages in Modimolle, Limpopo.

Photo Erik BritsThe journey started in Paternoster, and we are thrilled to share the experience with you as through the eyes of our guests.

PART 1 – ABALONE HOUSE

We decided to switch off from the buzz of the city for a bit – and there’s no better place than a little seaside village for that!

We were staying at Abalone House in Paternoster.  With the sunset we had on our first night away from the deck, it was clear that we were in for a treat.

Photo by Erik BritsMost of the guest rooms are in private enclaves on the upper level, and the deck outside the rooms has a gorgeous view.

Abalone House is the kind of place where you come to spend a weekend in your robe and slippers, enjoying the seaside atmosphere and your luxurious surroundings (5 stars well earned), with the occasional stroll down to the beach.

To top it all off, the cosy guest library and bar area has a hidden doorway – to the wine cellar!  We couldn’t resist the mystery!

Paternoster’s Abalone House and Spa now in a class of its own

reubens1Renowned five-star boutique guesthouse, Abalone House has crossed the threshold into the international hospitality arena. A coveted and highly-acclaimed Reuben’s restaurant along with an esteemed Healing Earth Spa opened today –  elevating Abalone House to new heights of luxury, decadence and service. The finest local cuisine and spa products are now showcased in an atmosphere of pure relaxation and sensual enjoyment.

Reuben Riffel is a celebrated household name in South Africa and is renowned for his culinary prowess. He chooses the best local ingredients, treats them respectfully and prepares them beautifully to create unique taste sensations. Double-baked snoek soufflé with salted apricots, roasted pork belly with chilli-lime and ginger caramel, malva pudding with buttermilk sherbet and Amarula custard hint at the unique cuisine that awaits diners at Reuben’s Abalone House.

“I have always loved Paternoster, since I first visited as a child of 14,” says Reuben. “The place still fascinates me and keeps drawing me back. There’s a unique atmosphere there that is relaxed and special, so I am delighted to have the opportunity to open a Reuben’s restaurant and explore the local ingredients, cook them simply and serve flavoursome food. The menu will be ever changing, though we will certainly keep the signature dishes.”

Tasked with opening Reuben’s at Abalone House, chef Aviv Liebenberg has worked at all three of Reuben’s other restaurants – located in Franschhoek, Robertson and at the five-star resort One&Only Cape Town. He says: “I understand Reuben’s concept well, so I am able to implement it easily in the restaurant. His food has a fresh country feel and is plated beautifully. There’s nothing fussy about Reuben’s cuisine. We prefer to use just a few ingredients simply and well.”

Elegant simplicity is also found in the Healing Earth Spa at Abalone House, which offers African inspired therapies and products in four calm treatment rooms – one customized for couples. This premium organic spa brand believes in ancient African traditions of healing and energy to bring about both health and relaxation. Founder Elisabeth Brandt says: “We have a nurturing, conscious approach to beauty based upon love for oneself, one’s fellow human beings and the earth we live on.”

Abalone House’s Healing Earth Spa will offer unique signature treatments available exclusively to guests with a menu that is a  first for Africa.

The unique Healing Earth products include the Earth Soul range, which uses indigenous ingredients such as Marula and Kalahari Melon, and the Pinotage Grape range – a vinotherapy range with powerful anti-oxidant qualities that is also thoroughly South African.  An enticing menu of face and body treatments is available to guests, and the beautifully soothing surroundings will ensure a deeply enjoyable experience.
